Det sjunde inseglet is regarded a masterpiece of cinema. The title refers to a passage about the end of the world from the Book of Revelation. Directed by Ingmar Bergman, the film is about the journey of Antonius Block(Max von Sydow), a knight who is disillusioned by unending war, plague, and misery. Von Sydow has concluded that God does not exist. Antonius Block finds that Death Bengt Ekerot has come for him and in order to buy time he engages Death to a chess match. The condition is that If he wins, he lives otherwise he'll allow Death to claim him. As they play they get into a spirited discussion over whether or not God exists.
