In a desperate winter many of the poor people of the village of Snowhill, Utah resort to stealing to keep themselves from going hungry. Since they are on the opposite side of the law in this matter a bounty is placed on their heads. This bounty attracts a group of bounty hunters to the town to capture the townspeople for their bounty. Among the desperate is Pauline (Vonetta McGee) who calls upon the help of a silent stranger, known simply as Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant), to evoke revenge upon Loco (Klaus Kinski), the leader of the bounty hunters, who killed her husband. In the end it is the enigmatic Silence who must go face to face with Loco to try and save himself and the townspeople.
