Captain T.C. Doyle (Ray Liotta) shows up in a Vietnam village to relieve the duty of Captain Sam Cahill (Danny Glover). The problem arises when the village loses their prized elephant, and in order to keep peace with the village, Doyle and Cahill must work together and get the village a new elephant. To make things worse, the villagers need the elephant for a ceremony within the week. With the help of the supply chief, David Poole (Dennis Leary) they manage to find an elephant, but they must transport it across south Vietnam. They must deal with transportation problems, issues amongst the men in the unit, and an North Vietnam unit that wants the relationship between the village and American soldiers to cease.
