In Texas, local Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) must investigate the dark secrets of the town’s past when the 40-year-old skeleton of Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson), a former bad sheriff, is located out in the desert. Sam also learns a lot about his honored late father, Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey), who had also been a sheriff and had killed off Wade and taken his place. The townspeople revere Buddy’s memory for this. Various members of the town have different perspectives on what happened, and Sam wants to learn the truth about his father. Sam also wants to have a relationship again with an old girlfriend, Pilar Cruz (Elizabeth Pena), whom his father had told him not to be with when they were teenagers.
