Mary Contrary (Annette Funicello) and Tom Piper (Tommy Sands) are engaged to be married. However, the scary miser, Barnaby (Ray Bolger), wants Mary for his wife. He arranges for Tom to be kidnapped and thrown into the sea. Tom is sold to gypsies instead. Barnaby also steals Mary’s sheep in an effort to force her to marry him. Barnaby hires the gypsies as entertainment during his wedding, where Tom reveals himself. Some children find tracks that Mary’s sheep left behind, leading into the Forest of No Return. The children follow the tracks and Tom and Mary follow the children. The trees come to life and tell them the Toy Maker (Ed Wynn) of Toyland now has custody of them. They go to the Toy Maker’s house and witness an accident that destroys all the toys. The group must help the Toy Maker rebuild all the toys in time for Christmas, but Barnaby is hot on their trail and has not given up hope that Mary will be his wife.
