Times are tough for Medfield College. Dean Higgins (Joe Flynn) can't get anybody other than the students interested in getting a computer for the science lab, so they go on their own to local businessman A. J. Arno (Cesar Romero) who willingly gives them a $20,000 computer in lieu of his annual donation of that same amount. During a demonstration, one of its parts malfunctions, but ambitious student Dexter Riley (Kurt Russell) volunteers to pick up a replacement. When he returns to the lab that night, it and the computer are struck by lightning, and Dexter ends up with the computer's memory somehow in his head. Overnight he becomes a celebrity for his encyclopedic knowledge and computational abilities, and is whisked off on a worldwide publicity tour. The Dean sees his opportunity to recoup Arno's withdrawn donation, and to show up his rival at the state college, when he enters Dexter in the $100,000 college quiz bowl. Dexter finds himself the center of attention, but before long Arno realizes that some of the data left on that computer, now in Dexter's head, leaves him and his illegal gambling operation vulnerable.
