Albert Dooley (Dean Jones) is a laboratory technician with a small income and a large family. He and his eccentric wife (Sandy Duncan) rescue one of his experimental animals, a duck, which is due to be killed because it doesn't respond well to laboratory conditions. The duck is taken home as a pet where its astonishing secret is discovered: thanks to some of the experiments performed on it the duck lays gold eggs. The Dooleys life style is transformed and they are involved in elaborate capers to keep the source of their new wealth a secret, especially from their inquisitive neighbour, a tax inspector.
