Seventeen year old Maya Dolittle (Kyla Pratt) has to deal with legacy of being able to communicate with animals like her father, animal veterinarian, Dr. Dolittle. She isn't crazy about having this legacy since it’s getting in the way of her being one of the popular kids and causing her to get in trouble at home. As result, her mother (Kristen Wilson) sends her to Durango ranch where she meets ranch owner Jud Jones (John Amos) and his good looking son, Bo (Walker Howard). Not wanting to be seen as freak by the new guy in her life and her new found friends, Maya hides her ability to talk to animals which is not easy when they are constantly finding was to gain her attention. She learns that the ranch is in financial trouble and wants to help keep the ranch from closing down, but she struggles with her need to not let anyone know of her unusual ability.
