Both Joel (Franchot Tone) and Garda Sloane (Ann Sothern) are a husband and wife detective team, yet at the same time also sell rare books in New York City. They both decide to take a vacation to Seaside City where Joel meets his pal Mike Stevens who happens to be managing and preparing for a beauty pageant. Much to Garda's dismay, Joel has invested a sum of money on the beauty pageant and so they are required to attend the gala event. Meanwhile Mike's boss, Eric Bartell (John Miljan) owes Ed Connors (Bernard Nedell) $20,000 and promises to give him $5,000. When Eric is suddenly found dead, the duo couple set out to investigate the mysterious case.
