Max Goldman (Walter Matthau) and John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon) play retired widowers who have been neighbors most of their lives. Their big thing is ice fishing and playing practical jokes on each other. Then Ariel (Ann-Margaret) moves in nearby, and a new rivalry begins. Both men start taking their best shots to win her attention. As subplots of the main story, Gustafson has a daughter, Melanie (Darryl Hannah), and Goldman has a son, Jakob (Kevin Pollack). Melanie is getting divorced, and Jakob has been interested in her for years, so another relationship begins. Gustafson is also busy eluding the IRS who is after him for back taxes. Burgess Meredith, as Gustafson's dad, adds wisdom by saying such things as "Looks like Chuck's putting the hot dog in the bun." After many hassles and hard feelings, the winner gets the girl.
