Using the legends of Lost Dutchman Mine and El Dorado in a story called "MacKenna's Gold," this tale of a treasure hunt and the greed it spawns centers on Sam MacKenna (Gregory Peck), a noble marshal with gold dust on the brain. Mexican outlaw Colorado (Omar Sharif) suspects that MacKenna knows where the treasure is hidden. As a true believer in the legend, Colorado wants MacKenna to lead him to the gold. Since everyone has gold fever, the ranks of gold rushers include the various members the Mexican gang, townsfolk from the nearby area, British adventurers, and the U. S. Cavalry. Amid great natural beauty of rocks and cliffs, the various characters double-cross each other at each opportunity. Even if the gold exists, none of these ne’er do wells will partake of it, proving greed is indeed a deadly sin.
