A 19 year old man Christopher Leiningen (Charlton Heston) comes to South America. He starts a chocolate plantation in a large land ashore the Rio Negro river. Being a harsh and serious person, he does not keep close relation with people. The story takes place in 1901 and he has reached the age of 34. Christopher want to get married but he does not know how to select the right girl. When he meets a girl he is unaware she is a widow but when he finds out, he gets angry and sends her back. After a week, she decides to go back to the United States. She was waiting for the ferry to US, but she comes to know that the chocolate plantation will be destroyed by ants within a couple of days. She informs him about this and they start to work together to protect the plantation.
