Max Sand (Steve McQueen) is content with his life on the ranch with his parents. Not yet a man, but not a boy, he goes about his day doing the chores necessary to keep the family place going. One day, his existence is totally changed when he happens upon the murder of his parents by a gang of wandering thugs. He gets a good look at them and vows to get revenge for his parents and for himself. He sets about his journey and comes upon a strange man, Tom Fitch (Karl Malden). Fitch knows all about guns and weapons. After failing to persuade Max to cease his vendetta, Fitch teaches gives him the knowledge he needs to master the use of guns. With this new knowledge and with a surprising flair for shooting, Max sets out to find the men responsible for his parent’s death. His journey leads him to find all three men. He successfully ends the life of two, but when he finally encounters the third, Max realizes he no longer has a thirst for blood and revenge. After throwing down his weapon, he vows to begin a new life, the life his parents would have wanted for him.
