Back during the California gold rush, Ben (Lee Marvin) and Pardner (Clint Eastwood) are partners. They live in a nameless town where men live wild and without women. So when a Mormon man comes through with 2 wives, it stirs up a frenzy. The men convince the miner to sell one wife, and Ben (drunk as always) wins her at auction. He and Elizabeth (Jean Seberg) marry. Shortly after the marriage the townsmen hear of a group of floozies who have moved into a town nearby. They plot to steal the women and bring them to their own town. Ben, who is a part of the plan, leaves Elizabeth with Pardner while he goes to fetch the women. Elizabeth and Pardner fall in love. When Ben returns Elizabeth convinces him that if a Mormon can have 2 wives, she can have two husbands. This arrangement works until a couple comes to stay with them. Pardner is assumed to be the husband which leaves Ben out in the cold. He goes to town where he starts plotting a new plan with the men.
