George Caldwell (Gene Wilder) thinks he witnesses a murder while he is traveling on a train from Los Angeles to Chicago. Along the way, he befriends a petty thief named Grover Muldoon (Richard Pryor) and falls in love with Hilly Burns (Jill Clayburgh). Grover becomes his ally as they are thrown off the train and forced to figure out how to get back on. This is difficult to accomplish because George is wanted by the authorities for offenses he did not commit, so he is forced to don a disguise. The bad guy, Roger Devereau (Patrick McGoohan) threatens them throughout the journey which ends spectacularly.
