The life of a hideously deformed person in 1482 Paris, France is one of simple minded buffoonery until he is touched by the friendship of a beauty woman Esmeralda (Gina Lollobrigida). Quasimodo (Anthony Quinn) is the Bell Ringer of Norte Dame Cathedral. Claude Frollo (Alain Cuny) is an Alchemist working in the tower and council to the King’s Court, who becomes obsessed with Esmeralda. Frollo’s obsession with Esmeralda leads him to nearly killing her lover Captain of Guard (Jean Danet) in her bedroom. Esmeralda is condemned to be hanged as a witch, but Quasimodo descending from the tower, carry’s Esmeralda into the Cathedral for sanctuary. This creates a dilemma from Frollo and Louis XI (Jean Tissier) when he must violate the sanctity of the church. Louis XI nullifies the church as a sanctuary, enraging the population and they set upon the church to retrieve Esmeralda in an effort to save her. Quasimodo defends Esmeralda, but when Esmeralda is escorted out bythe people, the kings guard kill her in a flurry of arrows. Quasimodo blames Frollo for what happened and throws him from the tower and then leaves the cathedral to be with Esmeralda in her finally resting place.
