In 1865, Old Jock (Alex Mackenzie), a country shepherd, comes to Edinburgh after being fired when money grew scarce at the farm he worked on. He brings along his faithful Skye terrier Bobby, who had refused to stay at the farm without him. Unfortunately, Old Jock, unused to the cramped quarters, bad heating, and overpacked conditions of city life, gets pneumonia and dies not long after arriving in the city. He is buried in Greyfriars churchyard and everyone forgets about his little dog - that is, until it's noticed that Bobby spends an unusual amount of time in Greyfriars on one particular grave. The church caretaker, James Brown (Donald Crisp) tries to keep Bobby out of the graveyard, but to no avail. Bobby's loyalty and devotion makes him a great favorite of all the neighborhood children, which soon saves his life. As an unowned, unlicensed dog, he is doomed to be put down, but the children collect money and pay for his license. Safe at last and loved by most, if not all, Bobby - now called Greyfriars Bobby, after the church, continues to guard his master's grave.
