Twenty-six men agree to participate in a vaguely described experiment for the promise of a big money reward at the end. They are told that they will be in a mock prison for 2 weeks and that the group is split in two, with half of the men acting as prisoners and the other half as prison guards. Travis (Adrien Brody) and Barris (Forest Whitaker) become fast friends before the experiment starts, but they will find their new friendship tested when Travis gets put in the prisoner group and Barris in the prison guard group. The experiment, run by Dr. Archaleta (Fisher Stevens), soon changes the men inside, with those in the prison guard group quickly becomes fierce and violent leaders, giving way to violence and rape.
