Avram (Gene Wilder) is a young Polish rabbi who is assigned to go to the United States and set up a synagogue in San Francisco where an arranged marriage has been set up. Once arriving on U. S. shores, he soon gets involved in a series of misadventures as he makes his way across the Old West, including encounters with a tribe of Indians, dealing with bushwhackers, and making a friend of outlaw and bank robber Tommy (Harrison Ford).
