Heavy Metal (1981) is an animated feature based on the comic magazine of the same name. Like the magazine, the movie is a sexy and violent anthology of science fiction and fantasy. The individual chapters are tied together by the story of a girl terrorized by an evil glowing green sphere called the “Loc Nar.” The Loc Nar appears in each of the stories, including “Harry Canyan.” and “Den.” Harry Canyan is a futuristic noir about a taxi driver who rescues a lovely damsel in distress. She has the Loc Nar and fat gangster (a la Sydney Greenstreet in the Maltese Falcon) wants it. Will Harry get the girl and the cash? Den is the story of pimply faced teenage loser Dan (John Candy) who is transport via the power of the Loc Nar to a Frazettaesque fantasy world where he becomes the muscular green hero, “Den.” As Den he gets the girl, saves the kingdom and enjoys many bawdy pleasures of the flesh along the way. “Heavy Metal” is 90 minutes of escapist fun.
