Although an orphan Heidi (Shirley Temple) attempts to be as cheerful as she can. This attitude enrages her Aunt Dete (Mady Christians), who takes Heidi to the mountains to live with her paternal grandfather, Adolph Kramer (Jean Hersholt). This loner is set in his ways and his stubbornness has made him an outcast among his neighbors in the mountains. He tends to his goats and sees them as the only fit company, however, he soon warms to his granddaughter and, through Heidi’s persistent positive attitude, he re-establishes relationships with some of the human residents of this alpine area. As their lives are reaching a nice equilibrium Aunt Dete kidnaps Heidi, spiriting Heidi away against her will and despite the protests of The Grandfather. The old woman wants her to be companion to an invalid her own age who is from a wealthy family. Grandfather is determined to have Heidi back with him. And Heidi is heartsick, yearning for her only true family and home she has made in the mountains.
