On New Years Eve, Hudsucker Industries President Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins) is standing on a ledge outside his office contemplating jumping. Only the month before he was a new college grad with no experience who needed a job. He found a mail room job at Hudsucker Industries. Shortly thereafter, Waring Hudsucker, company founder, committed suicide. Board member, Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman) concocted a plan to install an idiot as company president causing stock prices to fall so he can buy up Hudsucker’s stock at low prices. Delivering a letter to Mussburger’s office, Barnes created such havoc that he ended up being the idiot company president. Amy Archer (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a reporter who interviews Barnes about his new job, becomes his secretary. Snooping around at night, Archer hears of Mussburger’s plot. Barnes enrages board members then shows them his idea for making a hula hoop. The toy is instantly successful, saving the company. Barnes becomes cocky about his success. Amy leaves him, and Mussburger convinces the board he’s insane. He decides to jump. However, an angel reminds him of the letter he was to deliver to Mussburger which is in his apron pocket. The letter changes everything.
