Hijinks ensue as French officer Henri Rochard (Cary Grant) and American officer Catherine Gates (Ann Sheridan) team up in post-war Germany, bicker, fall in love, and go right on back to bickering as the army will not allow Rochard a place to lay his head. It is made clear from the start that the two dislike each other already, but they are sent on a mission together, and through various mishaps, fall in love. They soon get married, and are eager to start their honeymoon Stateside, but there is a bit of a bureaucratic hold-up. Rochard's French citizenship means he cannot enter the United States with his wife unless he is registered as a war bride. This gender confusion occupies a large part of the second half of the film, as Rochard and Gates try to find an army barracks that will put him up as an officer's bride, resulting finally in a bit of 1940s cross-dressing.
