In the town of Pauley, Matt Morgan (Kirk Douglas) is the town marshal. He has a good job and quietly enforces justice, peace and order. All of this is shattered on day when his lovely Native American wife is raped and killed by two strangers. Matt vows to get the killers and bring them to trial. He has little to start his investigation on but a expensive, custom saddle with the initials CB on it. He also knows that his wife was able to severely cut one the face of one of the attackers with a buggy whip. He is able to identify the saddle as belonging to that of an old friend, Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn) who lives in the town of Gun Hill. However, was his friend guilty of the murder of his wife? With dogged determination, Matt finds that it is really Craig’s son Rick (Earl Holliman) who is at the root of the attack. Now Matt must fight not only the corrupt justice system of Gun Hill, but his good friend to bring Rick to justice.
