Lt. Cmdr. Matt T. Sherman (Cary Grant) seeks to guide his submarine, the U. S.S. Sea Tiger to dock after it is damaged in combat. The ship is limping badly and morale is not high among the crew, save for Lt. Nick Holden (Tony Curtis), a free-spirited playboy who takes any opportunity to make his short tour of duty lively. En route to port, the crew finds a stranded group of Army nurses and are compelled -- by chivalry, duty, and a decided lack of female companionship – to help, much to Sherman’s chagrin. To compound his woes, while re-painting the submarine, the crew finds they have little supplies to coat the ship. They are forced to combine what little paint they can scavenge to finish the job. Red and white paint makes pink and the pink sub makes Sherman and his crew a laughingstock for Allied and Axis troops as well as among civilians they encounter.
