In 1983, former IRA soldier Gingy McAnally (Anthony Brophy) has been captured by his partners and blackmailed into murdering a Belfast judge. He is quickly arrested by British army officer Ferris (Cary Elwes), and cross-examined by callous inspector Rennie (Timothy Dalton), who puts pressure on Gingy to quit his friends in exchange for protection. Unfortunate Gingy is then moved to a secure place and he has to live there the life of an informant and stay active long enough to give evidence of terrorists responsible for recent bombings. His decision has disturbing results, costing him the faith of his wife and placing his life at severe risk.
