Young D'Artagnan (Douglas Fairbanks) comes up from the country to Paris with nothing to his name but his sword and a burning ambition to join the elite corps, the Musketeers, who act as the king’s personal guard. The young man is adopted by three veteran musketeers: Porthos (George Siegmann), Aramis (Eugene Pallette), and Athos (Leon Barry). The four form an insoluble bond, "one for all and all for one". Most of their endeavours in the film concern their adventures, featuring many daring sword-fights, in saving the reputation of the mysterious noblewoman Milady (Mary Pickford) from the evil schemes of Cardinal Richelieu (Nigel De Brulier).
